Itinerary

Day 1 – Moshi

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, our transfer driver will be waiting for you. He will take you to the Green Hills of Africa, where the rest of the day is at leisure. You might want to explore the town of Arusha (taxi required) or just relax at the hotel. In the evening you will be briefed by our team on site in preparation for the upcoming trekking tour.

Day 2 – Kilimanjaro National Park – Mandara Hut (2 700 m)

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be taken to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate (1,840 m). Once the necessary paperwork has been completed, your trek can begin and you will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest. You might be lucky to catch a glimpse of the thumbless black and white colobus monkeys scrambling through the lush vegetation. Approximately 4 hours later, you will reach your destination for the day, the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide will take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior. Evening meal and overnight stay at Mandara Hut (2,700 m).

Day 3 – Kilimanjaro National Park – Horombo Hut (3700m)

The day begins with an early breakfast and shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the treeline where vegetation changes to shrubs. Approximately 4 to 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight at an altitude of about 3,700 m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo peak, and the Masai Steppe. Evening meal and overnight stay at the Horombo Hut.

Day 4 – Kilimanjaro National Park – Zebra Rocks (4 020 m)

Today serves as an acclimatization day. This is very important and greatly improves your chances of reaching the summit. We take a 3-4 hour trek to Zebra Rocks, so named because of the distinctive black and white stripes. A warm lunch will be waiting for our return to the hut, where an afternoon of relaxation helps prepare for the following day.

Day 5 – Kilimanjaro National Park – Kibo Hut (4 700 m)

We get up at sunrise and after breakfast, we set off for the Kibo Huts (47 00 m). Again, it is roughly 12 km to our destination. The first half of the hike traverses upper heath land while the second half crosses the vast saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo. The saddle of Kilimanjaro is alpine desert and care must be taken on this rough terrain. After dinner we need a very early night as the next day there is an extremely early start.

Day 6 – Kilimanjaro National Park – Uhuru Peak (Summit 5 895 m)

Today is ‘The Big Day’ – the summit stage. Many hours before dawn we begin the final trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro. At sunrise, we reach Gillman’s Point (5 681m) which is the crater rim of Kilimanjaro, where the sun slowly starts to warm up the land. After a further hike of 1-2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5 895 m), we can celebrate the accomplishment of reaching the ‘Roof of Africa’. The route 5 back down is faster (compared to ascent) and a warm meal awaits us at the Kibo Hut. Later we continue on to the Horombo Hut where most of the mountain conquerors will be glad of an early night.

Day 7 – Kilimanjaro National Park – Moshi

The last stage passes through the heather and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2,700 m) where a cooked lunch awaits you. Soon you will again be in the lush tropical rainforest and after about 6 hours of trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate (1,860 m). After saying goodbye to your mountain crew you will be taken back to the Green Hills of Africa. At the hotel, you can have a warm shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Day 8 – Kilimanjaro – Tour Ends

After breakfast the tour ends, please let us know if you require any further transport.
