[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]“When you have a vision, nothing can stop you.”[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Popularly known as Mosotho or Herd boy, Sam Matekane came from humble beginning to become one of the richest businessmen in Lesotho.

There is little information about Sam Matekane’s childhood, except that he grew up in the mountains and had minimal education. Without formal business training or an elaborate business plan, because he didn’t even know how to prepare one, Matekane started a sole proprietorship in 1986 manufacturing bricks.

“I was the driver of the truck, the loader, the mechanic, the manager, (and) the secretary since I answered calls from prospective customers.”

Back then, getting bank loans were almost impossible, but Sam Matekane had a vision and he stuck with it. The sole business grew into a company and after Matekane bought his first truck, the company went into plant hire. Registered initially as Matekane Transport and Plant Hire, the company has evolved into a major conglomerate known as Matekane Group of Companies MGC.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”25645″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][vc_column_text]From plant hire, Matekane ventured into road construction, mining, property development, aviation and hospitality. For about ten years, MGC Mining has provided heavy-duty equipment for diamond mining in Lesotho along with the latest and best machinery, while its subsidiary MGC-RST Mozambique operates a coal mine in Mozambique. MGC also has gold and iron ore operations in South Africa and Liberia.

“Our main aim is to move Lesotho into a category of developed country from developing country.”

In 2009, Sam Matekane bought his first aircraft and diversified into aviation. Same year also, MGC Properties was incorporated and it has gone on to develop an estate, as well as erecting in the diplomatic district of Maseru, the exquisite Mpilo® Boutique Hotel, which was launched in December 2015. By August 2012, two helicopters, two 50-seater commercial jets and a private jet had been purchased by MGC Aviation.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”25646″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][vc_column_text]MGC Aviation runs international, national and VIP charter, corporate incentive travel, medical response, product launch and sporting events, aerial film and photography support, etc. Maluti Sky® was carved out of MGC Aviation in 2016 as a passenger airline operating flights between Maseru and Johannesburg. It is Lesotho’s first privately owned commercial airline and it plans to expand its services to Cape Town and Durban in the near future.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”25647″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][vc_single_image image=”25648″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][vc_column_text]Sam Maketane continues to explore business opportunities and has diversified into farming as well. The astute businessman through his conglomerate sponsors education, youths, sports, community initiatives and health programs in his country. With vision, hard work and dedication, Sam Maketane has evolved a small sole proprietorship into a multi-billion Maloti empire with 100 foreign experts among at least 1,200 employees.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”25649″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][vc_single_image image=”25650″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][vc_column_text]For additional information, please see:
