Juffureh was the birthplace of Kunta Kinte! The ancient little village is on the coast of the River Gambia in the Upper Niumi District, about 43km away from Banjul. Together with nearby Albreda which houses the Slavery Museum, and James Island (now Kunta Kinte Island), which lies 2km further away on the river, are attractions for students of world history, and tourists of Africans descent trying to discover their roots.

Tours are organized from Banjul regularly. The place is often packed during the celebration of the International ROOTS Festival around May.
