The idea for the International Arts & Craft Fair (SIAO) was initiated by the government after the successful hosting of a trade show billed Handcraft ’84 which took place between the 2nd and 9th of November 1984. The first official SIAO international trade show was held 20th – 27th of February, 1988 in Ouagadougou. Since then, the biennial event has become one of the biggest trade shows on the continent, where African arts and crafts products are displayed. Some of the major products on display include: calabash art, pottery and ceramics, jewelry, textiles, batik and apparels, leatherworks, musical instruments, bronze and iron, furniture and home décor, etc. The event attracts exhibitors from several African and non-African countries and is usually hosted from late October into early November.
